In Ethiopia, many boys and girls migrate to the closest big city in hopes of a better life by pursuing advancement through education or searching for work to send income to their families back home. However, after unsuccessful job searches and unmet promises, these children often end up in desperate living situations — trapped as home servants, stuck in an environment of abuse, or forced into physical labor. Many are unable to find their families again and become homeless, leading to increased vulnerabilities including trafficking.
In Colombia, around 2,000 young adults age out of the country's child welfare system every year with no support. Without a trusted support system, learning how to thrive independently or successfully transition into adulthood can feel nearly impossible for anyone; this, combined with the high crime and violence rate in Colombia, puts young adults at severe risk of homelessness, sex trafficking, mental illness, and substance abuse.
Through the AGCI & TTF Houses of Hope in Ethiopia, we provide trauma-informed care for children who have been separated from their family due to unmet promises and unforeseen circumstances after pursuing what seemed like hopeful opportunities for their future. These homes provide a nurturing environment that creates space for healing while local staff work to identify the families of the young girls and boys and reunify them when deemed safe and possible. At our House of Hope in Colombia, young women who have aged out the child welfare system find safety, holistic care, and a Christ-centered community to successfully transition into adulthood. Each of the girls are provided with mentorship, education support, meals, community, and most importantly, the hope of Christ.
We believe that there is power when we come together, and we are so grateful for the caring teams at AGCI who live out God's love by caring for these precious girls and boys in their darkest hour of need.
