With 5 young boys, adoption seemed overwhelming to Jeremiah Harder, but after decades of talking about adoption with his wife, Rebecca, God opened his heart. Rebecca recalls the first time their family saw a picture of their future daughter and sister…
“Our hearts fell in love with the sweet story and picture of a heart warrior in China. The burden, passion and excitement God placed on our hearts left no question that this was God’s timing. We began to pursue this little girl even though the odd’s seemed stacked against us.”
This little girl- “Hong Hong” was abandoned at six months old outside of an orphanage. That night, the orphanage took her to the hospital to find out that she had heart disease and major heart complications- a couple holes in her heart and a missing ventricle that went from her heart to one of her lungs. After surgery, Hong Hong was sent to a special baby home where she continued to receive medical care and specifically have three more surgeries. The Harders traveled to this foster medical home in China where they met Hong Hong for the first time…
“She came to us freely and let us hold her and hug her and kiss her. We felt amazed at the "meeting" and knew this moment had been covered in prayer. She trusted her caregivers enough to trust us with her precious little heart.”
While in the process of adopting, the Harders experienced adversity but recognized God in the center through it all…
“It was a rocky journey at many turns but experiencing each hurdle with our family I think cemented in our minds that fact that despite our own desires, God was in control and if this girl was to be in our family, it was only by God's grace.”
When the Harders received the call that they would be given a grant from TTF, Jeremiah cried tears of joy at how God provided for their family. Hong Hong, now named Verity is home with her forever family.
“Of course there were hard moments but I was encouraged and reminded of God’s promises and the story God wrote to bring us to the point of adopting Verity.”
