In Albania, a condition like Down syndrome is often seen as a tragedy, a shame, a curse, and a burden. To justify the lack of information available about disability, many people use the phrase “this is how they are.” Often times, people with disabilities are rejected or pushed aside by society due to insufficient medical and professional support for their families. The lack of resources, education, and support often leads to unemployment, a shortage of care, and a feeling of hopelessness.
The Tim Tebow Foundation has come alongside the Jonathan Center in Albania to help provide development, care, and advocacy for individuals with Down syndrome, as well as their families. Together, we believe that every child with special needs deserves love, care, and a welcoming community. Through Jonathan Center’s special needs programs, we empower people with special needs by providing physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, life skill courses, training and support for parents, employment preparation, support, and food packages for families in need.
